The working concept of the CERVIVE project is to focus on common European regional interests, without neglecting the special regional needs, as well as paying attention to innovative technical standards. The methodology that we propose for the development of project’s software tools is following the “Incremental Development Process Engineering (IDPE)”, while it takes under consideration the basic principles of the Rational Unified Process for the successful and fast development of efficient web applications. The Rational Unified Process offers a framework for the organization of work and a number of techniques that help to more efficient and fast implantation exploiting the IDPE Methodology. The most important element of the proposed methodology is that the determination of the final solution is not covered totally in the beginning of the project, but the system under development is determined step by step through the development of prototypes that are used for the extraction of additional requirements. This element matches the philosophy of the project that includes the Participating Ceramic Associations and their members to the development of the project tools.

The two main components of the project are:
  • The development of the Learning History Model for the Ceramic SMEs. The work will focus on what and how (by what means) will be captured and also how it will be delivered and exploited by the trainees. Training material on basic skills for junior ceramic entrepreneurs will also be prepared as assistive content (handbook). The modelling methodology will be designed in order the captured knowledge to be fully justified in a way that the senior offering the knowledge, to derive benefit (Learn by teaching) and better capitalise his lifetime achievements.
  • The development of the toolkit that will be the mean to capture and transfer the knowledge from the senior to the junior ceramists. The platform’s knowledge modelling tools, based on the learning History model customized for the ceramic sector will be integrated with an ontology that will undertake to model state of the art techniques and legislation in the ceramic sector and connect them with the existing experience and practices. The platform will be a continues support tool from the senior to the junior ceramists allowing apart from secure intra company information, the exchange of knowledge between ceramists all over Europe.
The implementation plan of the project is structured around these two main components, aiming to deliver the foreseen outcomes and finally wrap it all up in the pilot prototypes. Thus, the first work package is foreseen for the analysis of the current situation in each country, the second for the customization of the learning history model for the ceramic sector, the third for the development of the web platform of the history learning model, and the fourth for the pilot implementation and the evaluation of the results.A separate work package is planned for the dissemination of the projects’ results. Main issue of this work package is screening of possible business partners firstly within the Ceramic Sector, and secondly to other sectors’ stakeholders that will be willing to replicate the CERVIVE platform. . The final Work Package is addressed for the management of the project.

The major milestones of the project are the development of the learning history Model Customized for the Ceramic Sector, the Toolkit, the evaluation results with real users (120 ceramists will be trained using the toolkit) and least but most important the impact of the dissemination activities.
Work packages:
  • Analysis of current situation in all consortium countries: The aim is to identify end-users’ needs and draw early conclusions that will be used for the initial project setup. Based on the flexibility of the learning history model and on the concept of creating a powerful driving force, the economic and technical features will be identified and assessed. The ceramists to participate to the pilot implementation phase will be also selected.
  • Customization of the learning History Model : During this action, the learning history model will be assessed and customized to serve the real needs of Ceramic SMEs. A course on basic skills for ceramic entrepreneurs will be prepared.
  • Development of the history learning Toolkit: At each pilot site, pilot prototypes of the application will be built, allowing functional integration and system flexibility to be evaluated and improved in a cross-national framework, and user satisfaction to be assessed and reported.
  • Pilot implementation and evaluation: The ceramists to participate to the pilot implementation will be trained in using history learning tool. First the senior will be trained in documenting their knowledge and experience using the platforms wizards and then the junior will learn how to exploit the platform and learn from previous situations. These experiences will be observed, documented and analysed with ISO/IEC 9126-4, and best practices will be selected and exchanged between pilots. It is estimated that in the validation phase at least 20 ceramists of each of the pilot sites will participate.
  • Dissemination and exploitation: During the project four dissemination workshops will take place, initially to set the goals of the project and at the last stages of the project to disseminate project results. Further standard dissemination activities will be addressed during the project.
